This genome was sequenced as part of the JGI CSP "1KFG - Deep Sequencing of Ecologically-relevant Dikarya" and more specifically as a part of the Russulaceae Sequencing Project, which seeks to densely sample members of a diverse lineage of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi to examine functional diversity of ECM fungi with a shared evolutionary history.

Lactarius vividus 141

Lactarius vividus is a member of Lactarius sect. Deliciosi, a widely distributed edible mushroom in central and southern China (Wang, 2015). It can be easily recognized by the vividly colored, sub-distant to distant lamellae and heavy basidiospore ornamentation. Lactarius vividus has been found to grow with four pine species including Pinus latteri, P. massoniana, P. taiwanensis and P. thunbergii. The morphological characters, as well as the host specificity to Pinus, can be used to distinguish L. vividus from L. salmonicolor with which L. vividus had been misidentified in China (Chen et al, 2013). Genome sequencing and comparison study with other ectomycorrhizal clades in and out of Russulaceae would gain insights into its specific genomic and evolutionary features within Russulaceae, and also help understanding of the general genetic features shared by various ectomycorrhizal lineages.
