Sympodiomyces attinorum was isolated from laboratory nests of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens in Brazil. Sympodiomyces attinorum can ferment glucose, assimilate methyl alpha-D-glucoside, salicin and citrate, and grow at 37 degrees C.
Sympodiomyces attinorum is classified in the family Trichomonascaceae (Saccharomycotina) and was sequenced as part of the 1000 fungal genomes project.
